In 1857, Lafayette was officially declared a town with the addition of the local post office and later became a location for the Pony Express in the 1860s. Over the years, the town grew from a small agricultural village to a commuter town and was then incorporated in the 1960s. Today, the small, urban city of Lafayette affords a hip environment in the Bay Area, offering culturally rich events and incredible dining opportunities.

Like the Orinda and Moraga communities, Lafayette enjoys a natural setting surrounded by many parks, trails, reservoirs, and large open spaces, making this the perfect place for the outdoor enthusiast. Residents enjoy spending time outside, whether perusing vendors at the weekly farmers’ market or browsing the family-owned boutiques. Many families, young professionals, and retirees call the Lafayette neighborhood home and enjoy the picturesque views of the rolling California hills in the distance. 


Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

You can satisfy all cravings in Lafayette. There are dozens of dining options to choose from, with most restaurants offering diverse menus and comfortable, cozy atmospheres. Visit Headlands Brewing Company. for a “great beer adventure” and the Lafayette Public House to enjoy a delicious meal on their eclectic outdoor patio. Stop by Tutu’s, an organic restaurant and market, popular for their all-day breakfast options and expansive organic selections. Check out Diablo Foods, which has been family owned and operated for 53 years, offering the best customer services, specialty groceries, flowers, prepared meals and wine.


Known for its rotisserie chicken, The Cooperage American Grill is great for comfort food and the Social Bird is perfect if you’re looking for unique cocktails. La Fiesta Square offers a long list of restaurants and shopping opportunities - it’s a “one-stop-shop” for all your needs. While you’re out and about, make sure to visit the boutique shop Luck for high-end women’s clothing and Venture for specialty goods. 


Things to Do

A focal point of the city is the Lafayette Reservoir, which offers a variety of activities within its 928 acres. Spend the day fishing and boating and enjoy a picnic with the family for lunch. There are a few playgrounds with easy strolls along the Lakeside Nature Trail. Don’t forget about Lafayette Moraga Trail, a 7.65-mile linear park for hiking, biking, and equestrian use.


Rock the Plaza concerts and the Lafayette Art & Wine Festival will be returning in full swing for 2022. Rock the Plaza takes place every Friday evening in Plaza Park and the Art and Wine Festival is the largest annual festival in Contra Costa County. Stroll through hundreds of booths offering handmade gifts, food, wine tasting, and activities and enjoy the live music. The event is held in September each year.
